New projects should start on Gen 2: it gives per-developer sandbox environments, type safety between backend and frontend, and a cleaner path into CDK. Existing Gen 1 apps do not have to move immediately, but the migration is worth planning before the codebase grows further.
This is the right question to ask before you start. Amplify generates AWS CDK and CloudFormation underneath, so the resources it creates are ordinary AWS resources you already own. Teams usually escape gradually, adding custom CDK constructs for the parts Amplify does not handle, and some eventually manage the whole stack in CDK. We design with that path in mind so leaving is a decision rather than a rewrite.
